Ian uses a grid as a sandbox to generate contemplative imagery that takes on themes of idleness, waiting, confinement, and time. Conceptually speaking, he views a grid as a window, a contemplative space that is freeing and confining. His work uses imperfect shapes that reflect his hand in making images that give the work a poetic and romantic tone. Formally, his small, mid-sized, and large works utilize a grid as a way to create parameters around structure, shapes, and color.
